Beach Volleyball on Game Boy is one of those weirdly addictive little sports games that shouldn't work as well as it does. You've got these chunky pixel players who somehow manage to convey real intensity when they leap for a spike. The controls are dead simple—just a couple buttons—but timing your jumps and reading your opponent's moves takes actual skill.
What surprised me was how much personality they squeezed into this tiny cartridge. The crowd cheers when you score, your player wipes sweat between rounds, and there's even this hilarious animation where they faceplant in the sand if you mess up a dive. Playing against a friend turns into this frantic back-and-forth where you're both leaning into the screen like it's Wimbledon.
Sure, the graphics are basic by today's standards, but there's something charming about how the blue ocean background wobbles slightly, like the Game Boy's struggling to render waves. It's the kind of game you start playing for five minutes and suddenly realize an hour's gone by. If you've still got a Game Boy kicking around, this one's worth digging out.
