Battletoads for the Game Boy came out in 1991, developed by Rare and published by Tradewest. It was part of that wave of games trying to bring a full console-style brawler experience to the handheld, a pretty ambitious goal for the small screen and its limited buttons.

You control one of the Battletoads, either Rash or Zitz, fighting through levels to rescue your captured comrades. The main objective is to punch and kick your way through the Dark Queen's minions, screen by screen. A couple of its signature mechanics are the morphing attacks, where your fist or foot swells to a comical size for a powerful hit, and the variety of vehicles you have to pilot in certain stages, like the turbo tunnel that requires memorizing obstacle patterns. The pacing is relentless, and the difficulty is notoriously high, demanding quick reflexes and a lot of patience. Playing it feels like a constant, frantic scramble to survive just a little bit longer.
