Battletoads & Double Dragon: The Ultimate Team came out for the NES in 1993, a joint project from Rare and Tradewest. It was a time when the console was still home to a lot of ambitious side-scrollers, and this one stood out simply by bringing two different sets of characters together.

You pick one of five characters, either a Battletoad or a Double Dragon brother, and fight through levels packed with enemies. Your main goal is to stop the Dark Queen's spaceship from destroying Earth. You punch and kick your way through waves of foes, but the real fun is in the special moves; you can perform exaggerated, cartoonish attacks like turning your fist into a giant hammer or delivering a powerful uppercut. The game mixes standard street brawling with occasional vehicle stages, like a speeder bike chase, which drastically changes the pace. It's notoriously difficult, demanding precise timing and quick reactions to enemy patterns. Playing it feels like a constant, frantic scramble to survive.
