Battleship on the NES, released in 1993 by Mindscape, was one of those straightforward adaptations that showed up late in the console's life. It didn't try to reinvent the wheel, just brought the familiar grid based guessing game to the television. For a kid who had worn out the paper pads from the boxed game, it was a logical next step.

You control the targeting cursor, moving it across the enemy's ocean grid to select coordinates and fire. The main goal is to find and sink all five of the computer's hidden ships before it sinks yours. The core mechanics are placing your own fleet at the start and then the tense process of elimination hunting, listening for the distinct sound of a hit versus a miss. The computer opponent could be surprisingly shrewd, making the later missions a real test of logic. It feels like a quiet, thoughtful duel, where a single lucky guess can turn the entire game around.
