A significant mechanic is managing your weapon heat; if you fire the main guns too rapidly, they will overheat and become temporarily unusable, forcing you to wait for them to cool down. You also have a smokescreen to deploy for a quick, temporary shield from enemy fire. The pacing is methodical, as you carefully scan the horizon for targets while monitoring your systems, and the difficulty comes from being outnumbered and managing your limited resources effectively.
