About Battle Space (japan)
Battle Space is a Japan exclusive release for the original Game Boy. I don't recall the developer offhand, but it was one of those many space shooters that filled the library back then. It doesn't try to reinvent the genre, just offers a solid, straightforward experience on the handheld.
You pilot a small ship through vertically scrolling stages, shooting down waves of alien craft. Your main goal is simply to survive each level and defeat the boss waiting at the end. The game uses a screen by screen progression; you clear all enemies on one screen to advance to the next. You collect power ups to upgrade your main weapon and a limited supply of screen clearing bombs for emergencies. The pacing is methodical, and the difficulty can be unforgiving if you lose your upgrades. It feels like a careful, deliberate dance against a persistent enemy fleet.
