About Battle Chess
Battle Chess came out on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1990, developed by Beam Software. It was part of that wave of NES games trying to do something different with established ideas, taking a familiar board game and giving it a visual punch that stood out on the system.
You control the chess pieces on a standard board, moving them according to traditional rules with the goal of checkmating your opponent's king. The signature mechanic is the animated battle that plays out whenever one piece captures another; a pawn might get smashed by a rook that transforms into a stone golem, or a bishop and knight could duel with magic and swords. These short, sometimes humorous sequences break up the quiet strategy of the game. The pacing is slow and thoughtful, much like regular chess, but the NES version can feel a bit sluggish with its load times between moves. Playing it feels like a strange mix of careful calculation and sudden, cartoonish violence.
