BattleTanx: Global Assault came out for the Nintendo 64 in 1999, developed by 3DO. It was a time when local multiplayer was the main event for many N64 owners, and this game was built for that. You got a solid single-player campaign, but the real draw was getting a few friends together in the same room.

You control a commander driving a heavily armed tank through post-apocalyptic cities. Your main goal is to fight through enemy forces and often rescue your queen, who has been captured. The signature mechanics involve collecting power-ups to upgrade your tank's weapons and using a special radar to locate your objectives. You also have a limited number of special weapons, like nukes, that can clear the screen of enemies. The pacing is fast; you are constantly moving and shooting, managing your health and ammo against waves of rival tanks. It feels chaotic and direct, a straightforward fight for survival where every shot counts.
