Battle City came out for the Game Boy in 1990, published by Nintendo. It was a portable version of a game many knew from the NES, fitting right into that era of straightforward, action focused titles you could take anywhere. You controlled a small tank from a top down perspective, tasked with defending your base from waves of enemy tanks. The goal was simple: survive.

You maneuver your tank around a maze of destructible and indestructible bricks, shooting every enemy that appears. The main objective is to protect the eagle icon at the bottom of the screen while clearing all enemy units. Signature mechanics include the ability to destroy certain walls to create new paths and the power ups that occasionally drop, upgrading your tank's firepower or speed. The pacing is relentless; enemies pour in from the top of the screen, and the difficulty escalates quickly as you progress. It feels tense and immediate, a constant test of your positioning and reflexes.
