I remember picking up Batman on the Game Boy back in 1989, a Sunsoft release that came out alongside the movie. It was a solid black cartridge, one of many action games on the system, and it felt like a serious attempt to bring a console-style adventure to the small screen. You didn't get many licensed games with that level of ambition on the Game Boy at the time.

You control Batman through a series of side-scrolling stages, moving screen by screen. Your main goal is to fight through thugs and super villains to rescue a kidnapped Vicki Vale. You punch and kick enemies, but your main tool is a limited supply of Batarangs you can throw. The levels are linear but require careful jumps and some exploration to find hidden power-ups that restore your health. The game moves at a deliberate pace, and the difficulty is unforgiving; one wrong jump or missed attack often means starting the stage over. Playing it feels like a constant, tense negotiation with the controls and the level design, where every small victory matters.
