Bass Tsuri No. 1 is one of those weirdly chill N64 fishing games that somehow makes sitting in a virtual boat for hours actually fun. It’s got that classic Shigesato Itoi charm—same guy behind EarthBound—so even the menu screens have this oddly cozy vibe.
You start off picking your gear (the lures look way more detailed than they need to be) and then just… fish. The water physics are surprisingly good for an N64 game—you can see ripples, shadows, even little fish darting under your boat. Half the time I just end up staring at the lake instead of actually casting.
It’s not all zen, though. There’s strategy in where you cast, how you reel, even the time of day. Mess up and you’ll watch your lure snag on weeds while a giant bass casually swims past. It’s the kind of game where you’ll lose track of time just trying to beat your own record.
If you’ve ever wanted to fish without the sunburn or the smell, this is as close as the N64 gets.
