About Bananan Ouji No Daibouken (japan)
Bananan Ouji no Daibouken is a Japan exclusive Nintendo Entertainment System release from 1991, developed by KID and published by Takara. It arrived late in the Famicom's life, a time when developers were still finding new ideas for the aging hardware. The game was later altered and released in Germany as Banana Prince, but the original Japanese version is the one I spent time with.
You control the Banana Prince, a small character who moves through a world of interconnected, screen by screen platforming stages. Your main goal is to rescue a princess, which involves navigating forests, caves, and castles. A key mechanic is your ability to throw seeds that sprout into vines, creating new platforms to reach higher areas or cross gaps. You also collect fruit to restore health and search for keys to unlock doors blocking your path. The pacing is deliberate, requiring careful observation of each screen's layout to figure out where to place your vines. It feels like a thoughtful exploration game where your primary tool is growth itself.
