Bakushou! Star Monomane Shitennou is one of those weird, Japan-only NES games that makes you go, "Wait, what is this?" At first glance, it looks like a wacky impersonation contest—four comedians (the "shitennou" or "four kings") try to mimic celebrities, and you score them based on how close they get. The whole thing's got this early '90s Japanese TV vibe, complete with exaggerated animations and over-the-top reactions.
Gameplay's simple but chaotic. You pick a comedian, then mash buttons to match the timing of their impressions while the audience judges you. Some of the references are super niche (good luck recognizing half these Japanese celebs if you didn’t grow up there), but the absurdity kind of carries it. The music’s catchy in that old-school Famicom way, and the pixel-art faces are hilariously expressive when they nail—or bomb—a bit.
Definitely more of a novelty than a deep game, but it’s got charm if you’re into obscure, quirky stuff. I still don’t know why they never localized it—maybe lost-in-translation humor?
