About Badminton
I remember playing Badminton on the Nintendo Entertainment System back in 1988. It was developed by Aicom, a name you might recognize from other NES titles of that era. This game arrived when sports simulations, especially for less common Olympic events, were finding a niche on the console. It was a straightforward attempt to translate a racket sport into 8-bit form.
You control a single player on a side-scrolling court, moving your character left and right to hit the shuttlecock back over the net. The main objective is to outscore your opponent by making them miss a return. The gameplay relies on timing your swings; you can perform different shots like clears and smashes depending on your positioning and button press. Matches are typically fast, and the computer opponent can be surprisingly persistent, forcing you to anticipate the shuttle's arc. It feels like a simple test of reflexes where a single mistimed move can cost you the point.
