About Ayakashi No Shiro
Ayakashi No Shiro came out for the Game Boy in 1990 from publisher Irem. It was part of that wave of early handheld games that tried to bring a full console style adventure into your pocket. You explore a cursed castle, room by room, in a methodical search for its secrets.
You control a lone warrior navigating the castle's many screens. Your main goal is to find and assemble the scattered pieces of the Magatama to break the castle's curse. The game uses a unique magic system where you collect spell cards to attack enemies or solve puzzles; you also switch between a sword for close combat and a bow for hitting distant targets. Progress is deliberate, as the castle is large and filled with respawning enemies, making careful exploration essential. It feels like a thoughtful, sometimes tense puzzle box where every new room could hide a vital clue or a sudden ambush.
