I first played Avenging Spirit on the Game Boy back in 1991. It was released by Jaleco, a company that put out a number of interesting titles during that era. The Game Boy library was full of straightforward platformers and puzzle games, but this one always stood out for its unusual premise. You control the ghost of a boy whose girlfriend has been kidnapped. Your main goal is to navigate through a series of city and industrial levels to rescue her. The core mechanic is possession; you can fly into enemies and take over their bodies, each with unique abilities like shooting, punching, or flying. You explore screen by screen, fighting other creatures and avoiding hazards. The game moves at a brisk pace and can be quite difficult, as your host bodies take damage and eventually die, forcing you to find a new one. It feels frantic and inventive, constantly making you adapt your strategy on the fly.
