Avenging Spirit is one of those weird, cool Game Boy games that sticks with you. You start off dead—like, immediately—and then spend the whole game as a ghost possessing different people to get revenge. The first time I played, I wasn’t sure how it’d work, but hopping between bodies (each with their own moves, like a boxer’s punch or a ninja’s shuriken) actually feels surprisingly smooth.
The pixel art’s got that classic early ‘90s charm, and the levels are just the right mix of action and figuring out which host works best for the situation. Some enemies are way easier to take down as the strongman, while others… well, let’s just say the old lady with the umbrella has her uses. It’s short but satisfying, with that arcade-y vibe where you’ll probably die a lot but keep jumping back in anyway.
If you dig retro games that do something a little different, this one’s a blast. Just don’t expect a happy ending—you are a vengeful ghost, after all.
