About Asteroids
I first played Asteroids on the original Game Boy, the one with the greenish screen. It was released in 1991 by Accolade, I think. This was a time when getting a decent arcade port on a handheld felt like a small miracle. The game was a direct translation of the black and white vector classic, which fit the monochrome hardware surprisingly well.
You control a small triangular ship stranded in a field of drifting asteroids. Your goal is to survive by shooting the rocks into smaller pieces until they vanish. The ship rotates left and right, and you thrust forward, building momentum that carries you across the screen. A key mechanic is hyperspace; you can press a button to disappear and reappear somewhere else randomly, a desperate gamble to avoid collision. The asteroids drift and spin with a consistent, almost predictable physics, but the screen quickly fills with fragments, making navigation tense. The game has a steady, escalating rhythm as you clear one wave only for another, faster one to appear. It feels like a solitary battle against an indifferent universe, where a single mistake sends you back to the start.
