About Aretha (japan)
Aretha was released for the Game Boy in 1990 by Japan Art Media. It came out during a time when developers were figuring out how to build substantial role playing games for the handheld. This one is part of that early wave, a fantasy adventure that tries to fit a console style experience onto the small screen.
You control a young woman named Aretha, guiding her through a world viewed from above. Your main goal is to restore the world's balance by finding the three elemental rings. You explore towns and the overworld screen by screen, talking to people for clues. Combat happens on a separate screen where you input commands to attack, use magic, or defend against monsters. The pacing is deliberate, with a lot of backtracking through areas you have already cleared. It feels like a slow, thoughtful journey where every new path requires careful consideration of your resources.
