Archon came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1989, published by Bullet-Proof Software. It was a time when developers were experimenting with blending genres, and this was one of those attempts to bring a different kind of strategy game to the console.

You control an assortment of fantasy creatures on a grid, moving them like chess pieces with the goal of capturing all five power points or eliminating the opponent's units. The core twist happens when two pieces meet on the same square; the game shifts to a real-time combat screen where you directly control your unit. You maneuver around the arena, firing projectiles or using melee attacks to destroy the other piece. The outcome isn't guaranteed, as even a powerful piece can be defeated by a weaker one through skillful play, and sometimes both units perish in a double-kill.
