About Arch Rivals - A Basket Brawl!
Arch Rivals: A Basket Brawl! came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1989, published by Midway. It was part of that wave of arcade sports games that tried to be more about fun than strict simulation. On the NES, it stood out simply for being a basketball game where you could punch the other team.
You control one of several two-player teams, moving your player up and down the court. The main goal is to outscore your opponent, but the real objective is to fight. You can shove, trip, and punch opposing players to steal the ball, and the referees never call fouls. The game is split into distinct screens for each half-court, and you must dribble the ball past the mid-court line to advance. Matches are fast and chaotic, with the difficulty coming more from the constant brawling than complex plays. It feels like a playground argument turned into a video game.
