I picked up Arcade Classics: Super Breakout & Battle Zone for the Game Boy when it came out. It was published by Nintendo and bundled two classic arcade games into one small cartridge. This was typical for the time, a straightforward way to bring arcade hits to a handheld. You got two distinct experiences for the price of one, which felt like a good deal.

In Super Breakout, you control a paddle at the bottom of the screen, deflecting a ball to smash rows of colored bricks. The main goal is to clear all the bricks without letting the ball pass your paddle. Signature mechanics include the progressive challenge of the Cavity level, where you aim the ball into a protected area, and the Double level, where you juggle two balls at once. The game starts simply but the speed increases quickly, demanding sharp reflexes. In Battle Zone, you control a wire-frame tank viewed from a first-person perspective, navigating a barren vector landscape to destroy enemy tanks and avoid missiles. Your objective is to survive as long as possible and achieve a high score, using the periscope viewfinder to spot and line up shots on distant targets. The flat, geometric terrain and the constant threat of enemies appearing from any direction create a tense, isolating atmosphere. Playing these games feels like a direct, no-frills test of your focus and timing.
