About Anticipation
Anticipation came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1988, developed by Rare. It was part of that wave of NES games trying to translate party and board game concepts into a digital format, sitting alongside titles that experimented with multiplayer on a single screen.
You control one of four simple tokens, like a pair of women's shoes or a teddy bear, moving around a board. The main goal is to be the first to correctly guess what is being drawn on screen, which advances your piece. The core mechanics involve a picture being drawn slowly, a die counting down from six to determine how many spaces you can move for a correct guess, and progressing through levels by solving one puzzle from each of four categories. The pacing is deliberate, and the difficulty can feel sharp on the higher settings where you must complete all four levels. It feels like a quiet, focused race against your opponents.
