About Antarctic Adventure
Antarctic Adventure came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1984, developed and published by Konami. It was part of that early wave of NES titles, a simple game built around a straightforward concept. You don't see many games set in Antarctica, so it always stood out on the shelf, a little different from the usual space or fantasy settings.
You control a penguin named Penta, and your goal is to win a race across the frozen continent. The game plays out screen by screen; you run from left to right, jumping over cracks in the ice and avoiding obstacles like seals and polar bears. You collect flags for points and fish to replenish your stamina, which constantly drains as you run. If your stamina runs out, Penta slows to a crawl, making it easy for the clock to run out. The pacing is relentless, and the controls are slippery, which adds to the challenge. It feels like a frantic dash against time and your own energy bar.
