About Alfred Chicken
Alfred Chicken came out for the Game Boy in 1993, developed by Twilight and published by Mindscape. It was part of that wave of early nineties platformers that tried to do something a little different on the handheld, standing out with its oddball character and levels instead of just being another mascot clone. You don't see many games where you play as a chicken pecking your way through a mechanical world.
You control Alfred, a chicken on a mission to rescue his kidnapped friends. The main goal is to navigate through a series of side scrolling levels, pecking at enemies and specific blocks to uncover items and open new paths. A key mechanic is the pecking action; you use it to defeat enemies, but also to reveal hidden platforms and collect the letters that spell "C-H-I-C-K-E-N" in each stage. The game is structured screen by screen, and you often need to clear all enemies from an area to proceed. The pacing is deliberate, sometimes slow, as you figure out the exact sequence of pecks needed to advance. It can be quite difficult, with precise jumps and enemy patterns that require patience. Playing it feels like solving a quirky, interactive puzzle with a feathery protagonist.
