About Alfred Chicken (europe)
Alfred Chicken came out in 1993 for the Nintendo Entertainment System, a time when the 16-bit consoles were already on the rise. It was published by Mindscape and developed by Twilight, a name that doesn't come up too often. This was a late era NES game, one of those titles that felt like it was pushing the limits of what the 8-bit hardware could still do visually.
You control Alfred, a chicken on a mission to rescue his friends from a mechanical menace. The game is a side-scrolling platformer where you move screen by screen. Your main actions are pecking enemies and bouncing on their heads to defeat them. You also collect giant letters that spell "C-H-I-C-K-E-N" in each level, which is your primary objective. The pacing is methodical; you need to explore each area thoroughly to find all the letters while avoiding hazards and enemies. Some levels introduce mechanics like riding mine carts or navigating more complex enemy patterns. The difficulty can be unforgiving, with precise jumps required and enemies that respawn if you leave the screen. Playing it feels like a careful, deliberate puzzle where every jump and peck matters.
