About Akumajou Special
Akumajou Special came out for the Game Boy in 1990, published by Konami. It was part of that early wave of portable games trying to capture the feel of bigger console adventures. You guide Simon Belmont through a condensed version of the classic Castlevania castle, moving from one screen to the next in a straightforward path.
You control Simon, whipping candles for hearts and other items while fighting off monsters. Your main goal is to reach and defeat Dracula. The game uses a screen by screen exploration structure; you clear an area of enemies before you can proceed. Combat relies on your whip, and you can collect sub weapons like the axe or holy water. The pacing is quick, and the difficulty is quite sharp for a handheld title, demanding precise jumps and attacks. It feels like a challenging, compact version of the castle crawl you already know.
