Akumajou Dracula—the original Japanese version of what we know as Castlevania—is where it all started. You play as Simon Belmont, stuck with the family curse of hunting Dracula, armed with nothing but a whip and some holy water (which, honestly, becomes your best friend fast). The first level throws you right into it: flickering candles hiding power-ups, zombies shambling toward you, and Medusa heads flying in that annoying zigzag pattern you’ll learn to hate.

The controls feel stiff at first—Simon doesn’t exactly move like a ninja—but once you get used to the rhythm, cracking that whip becomes weirdly satisfying. And the music? Absolute bangers. That first staircase climb with the iconic theme blaring still gives me chills. Just don’t expect mercy—this is old-school NES hard, where one wrong jump means starting the whole section over. But beating Dracula after all that? Worth every death.
