About Airboarder 64
I picked up Airboarder 64 back in 1998, a year when the Nintendo 64 was full of ambitious 3D experiments. It was developed by Human Entertainment, a company known for a few cult classics. This game was their attempt at a 3D platformer, a genre that was defining the console at the time, though it never quite reached the same level of recognition as its peers.
You control a kid on a futuristic hoverboard, navigating through a series of obstacle course levels. The main goal is straightforward: reach the end of each stage. Your primary tools are jumps and grinds; you ollie over gaps and slide along rails, building speed. The level design is screen by screen, almost like a 3D reinterpretation of an arcade platformer, which makes the pacing feel methodical. It is not an easy game, as the controls demand precision and a single mistimed jump sends you back to the start. The whole experience feels like a constant, tense balancing act between momentum and control.
