Air Boarder 64 is one of those weird, late-era N64 games that never made it outside Japan—which is a shame, because it’s basically hoverboard racing with a ridiculous '90s anime aesthetic. You’re zipping through neon-lit futuristic cities and half-pipes, pulling off mid-air spins that feel way more exaggerated than they should. The controls take a second to click (hold Z to charge jumps, then flick the stick for flips), but once they do, it’s pure arcade chaos.
What’s cool is how the tracks loop around themselves—you’ll drop off a skyscraper, grind a rail upside-down, then boost through a tunnel while the camera goes nuts. It’s janky in that classic N64 way, but the sheer speed and over-the-top tricks make up for it. Oh, and the multiplayer is a blast if you can convince a friend to suffer through the learning curve with you.
Definitely not a polished racer, but it’s got charm for days if you’re into weird retro experiments.
