I first played AeroFighters Assault on the Nintendo 64 back in 1997. It was developed by Paradigm Entertainment, and it arrived during a time when the N64 library was expanding with various takes on 3D flight. This game was their attempt at a more serious, mission-based air combat experience, a contrast to some of the more arcade-style shooters available on the console then.

You pilot a selection of fighter jets through a series of missions, with the primary goal of eliminating all enemy targets in an area. The gameplay is structured around free-roaming 3D environments where you hunt down specific threats, from enemy aircraft to ground installations. Two mechanics stand out: the lock-on targeting system for your missiles, which requires you to maintain a bead on an enemy for a clean shot, and the mission objectives that often change mid-sortie, forcing you to adapt your strategy on the fly. The pacing is methodical, leaning more toward simulation than frantic action, and the difficulty can be unforgiving if you fail to manage your threats. It feels like you are a pilot responsible for a specific, volatile piece of airspace, constantly scanning the horizon for the next threat.
