I first played Adventure Island on my Game Boy in 1992, a time when portable games were simple and often punishing. It was developed by Hudson Soft, and it fit right in with the platform's library of action platformers that demanded quick reflexes and a lot of patience. You controlled a character named Master Higgins, a guy in a grass skirt who had to rescue his girlfriend Tina from an evil witch doctor. The game was split into distinct areas, each with its own theme and set of enemies.

Your main goal was to navigate from the left side of the screen to the right, jumping on platforms and avoiding creatures like snails and birds. You could pick up weapons, like a stone axe, to defeat enemies from a distance. The levels were designed screen by screen, so you had to clear one section before moving to the next. A key mechanic was managing your health, which constantly drained unless you found fruit to eat. The pacing was relentless, and the difficulty was steep, with instant death from pits or a single hit if you lost your weapon. Playing it feels like a constant, tense race against your own depleting energy bar.
