Adventure Island 2 came out for the NES in 1991, developed by Hudson Soft. It was part of that wave of late NES platformers that built on familiar ideas without reinventing the wheel. You control Master Higgins, the island hero, who sets out to rescue Tina, the sister of Princess Leilani, after she is captured by an evil witch doctor.

You move through the game screen by screen, navigating several distinct islands. Higgins can throw stone axes and ride his trusty skateboard, but the big addition here is the dinosaur companions. You find eggs that hatch into one of four dinosaurs: a blue one that whips its tail, a red one that breathes fire, a Pteranodon that lets you fly and drop rocks, and an Elasmosaurus for swimming quickly. Your main objective is to explore each island, defeat the boss at the end, and collect the magical item it guards. The pacing is brisk, and the difficulty can be steep, especially in later stages where precise platforming is essential. It feels like a challenging but rewarding trek through a vibrant, dangerous world.
