About Advanced Dungeons & Dragons - Hillsfar (japan)

I first played Advanced Dungeons & Dragons: Hillsfar on the NES back in 1993. It was published by FCI, and it was one of the later releases for the system, a time when many developers were already moving on to the 16-bit consoles. The game stood out for trying to bring a specific kind of PC role-playing experience to the console, focusing more on city life and mini-games than a typical fantasy epic.

You control a lone adventurer exploring the city of Hillsfar and the surrounding wilderness. Your main goal is to build your reputation by completing quests for various factions, which involves a lot of traveling between locations on a world map. The gameplay is broken into distinct parts: you navigate the city and wilderness screen by screen, and you engage in separate action sequences for combat and specific skills. Sword fighting happens in side-scrolling arena battles, while archery and jousting are handled as timing-based mini-games. You'll spend a lot of time delving into randomized dungeons that change each time you enter, fighting monsters and gathering gold and equipment to improve your character. The pacing can feel slow because of the constant travel, and the difficulty spikes in the dungeons are significant. Ultimately, playing Hillsfar feels like a series of small, sometimes disjointed challenges rather than one continuous adventure.
