About Action 52
Action 52 came out in 1991 for the Nintendo Entertainment System, an unlicensed cartridge from a company called Active Enterprises. It was a strange release even for its time, a collection of 52 different games on one cartridge, which was an unusual concept on the NES.
You control various characters across the different games, from a fire-breathing hero to a sword-wielding adventurer. The main objective changes with each game, but generally involves moving screen by screen, shooting enemies, or navigating simple platforming challenges. Signature mechanics include basic side-scrolling movement, straightforward projectile combat, and collecting items to progress. The pacing is often slow and the difficulty is notoriously uneven, with many games feeling unfinished or nearly unplayable due to glitches and poor design. Playing it feels like digging through a box of broken toys, where the brief moments of functionality are overshadowed by constant frustration.
