About 720
720 came out on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1989, a port of the Atari Games arcade original. It arrived during a time when the NES library was diversifying, offering experiences beyond the standard platformers and shooters. This was one of the first attempts to bring a skateboarding simulation to a home console.
You control a lone skateboarder navigating a large, interconnected city map. The main goal is to earn enough money by performing tricks in different skateparks to buy a ticket to the next, more difficult competition. Your primary tools are the ramps and half-pipes within each park, where you build momentum to launch into the air and execute grabs and spins. The constant pressure comes from the skatepark timer and the aggressive, swooping enemy birds that try to knock you off your board. Success depends on quick directional inputs for tricks and careful route planning on the overworld map to find the parks you need before your score timer runs out. It feels like a frantic race against the clock, where a single mistimed jump can send you back to the start.
