I first played 40 Winks on the Nintendo 64 back in 1999, a time when 3D platformers were everywhere. It was developed by Eurocom, and it had that particular look and feel of a late-era N64 game, trying to carve out its own space alongside the more famous titles. You don't hear about it much now, but it was one of those games you'd rent for the weekend.

You control either Ruff or Tumble, two kids trying to reclaim their stolen dreams from the mischievous twins Nitekap and Nitekap. The main goal is straightforward: explore a series of themed worlds, like a spooky mansion or a pirate ship, to collect the forty magical winks. The gameplay is built on classic platforming; you run and jump across floating platforms, defeat enemies by bouncing on them, and search every nook for keys and items. A signature mechanic is the mask system, where you find different masks that grant temporary powers, like a knight's helmet for bashing or a jester's hat for a high jump. The levels are structured screen by screen, which makes the exploration feel contained and manageable, though some jumps require precise timing. The difficulty is generally fair, but it can spike in later stages where the platforming gets more demanding. Playing it feels like a comfortable, if slightly unpolished, trip back to a familiar genre.
