About 1999
I first played 1999 on the Nintendo Entertainment System, a game that never actually saw a commercial release. It was developed by a small team, and you can feel that experimental spirit in its design. It exists as a kind of unfinished artifact from the late NES era, a time when developers were pushing the hardware in new directions.
You control a lone explorer navigating a large, interconnected fortress. Your main goal is to find and assemble the scattered pieces of a powerful artifact. The game is built on screen by screen exploration; each new area loads as you cross the threshold. You use a sword for close combat and a limited supply of arrows for distant threats. Progress is methodical, as you map the labyrinthine corridors in your mind and manage your resources carefully. The difficulty is unforgiving, with limited checkpoints and enemies that respawn. Playing it feels like piecing together a fragile, half forgotten map.
