I first played Zombies Ate My Neighbors on the Sega Genesis back in 1993. It was developed and published by LucasArts, a company known for point and click adventures, so this was a different kind of project for them. You control either Zeke or Julie, two kids armed with an increasingly weird arsenal, from squirt guns and soda cans to bazookas. Your goal is simple: rescue your neighbors, who are scattered across dozens of levels, before the monsters get them. The game progresses screen by screen through suburban backyards, shopping malls, and pyramids, and you are constantly searching for hidden exits and new weapons. The pacing is relentless; you are always running, dodging chainsaw wielding maniacs, and fending off giant ants. It feels like a frantic, hilarious scramble against an absurd apocalypse.
