You control a custom student character, navigating the school grounds screen by screen to talk with other students and find duelists. Your main goal is to build your reputation by winning duels and progressing through the story. The game uses the standard rules for the card game at that time, with the added mechanic of Spirit Partners; these are characters from the show who join you and offer specific deck suggestions or challenges. You spend a lot of time collecting new cards by winning them from opponents or buying packs, constantly tweaking your deck. The pacing is fairly relaxed, letting you explore and duel at your own speed, though some of the later duels can be quite difficult. It feels like a solid, portable version of the card game with a school life sim wrapped around it.
