Yie Ar Kung-Fu on the Genesis is one of those old-school fighters that feels clunky at first—until you realize it’s basically the grandpa of every fighting game you love today. You pick your fighter (I always went with the dude in red, no idea why) and jump into these tiny, pixelated arenas against opponents who each have their own weird gimmick. The nunchuck guy? Annoying. The lady with the throwing stars? Even worse.
It’s not flashy, and the controls take some getting used to—no fancy combos here, just basic punches, kicks, and a lot of trial-and-error spacing. But there’s something weirdly satisfying about finally figuring out how to counter that one enemy who kept wrecking you three matches in a row. The music’s got that classic arcade chip-tune vibe, too—you’ll hum it for days.
If you’re into retro games, it’s a neat little time capsule. Just don’t expect Street Fighter.
