X-Men: Destiny on DS is one of those games that feels like a weird, stripped-down version of what it could’ve been—but there’s still some fun to be had if you go in with the right expectations. You pick one of three mutants (none of them are big-name X-Men, which is kind of a bummer), and then you’re thrown into this messy war between the Brotherhood and the X-Men. The combat’s basic—mostly button-mashing with a few special moves—but customizing your powers as you level up is where it gets interesting. Do you want to be a tank, a speedster, or something in between? Choices matter, at least a little.
The story’s forgettable, and the DS graphics don’t do it any favors, but if you’re just looking for a quick superhero fix with some light RPG elements, it’s not the worst way to kill a couple hours. Just don’t expect anything close to the console version.
