World Heroes on the Sega Genesis is one of those weird, janky fighting games from the '90s that somehow still holds up. You’ve got Joan of Arc throwing fireballs, Rasputin doing… whatever Rasputin does, and a bunch of other historical figures turned into pixelated brawlers. The first time I played, I picked Hanzo because ninja, obviously—turns out his teleport move is way harder to pull off than it looks.
The sprites are chunky, the animations are stiff in that classic early-'90s way, and the AI cheats like crazy on higher difficulties. But there’s something oddly satisfying about landing a desperation move just as the timer runs out. It’s not Street Fighter, but if you’re into retro fighters with personality (and questionable balance), this one’s a fun time capsule.
Just don’t expect to take it too seriously—half the fun is watching Genghis Khan suplex someone.
