About World Championship Soccer
World Championship Soccer came out for the Sega Genesis in 1991, developed and published by Sega. It was part of that early wave of 16-bit sports games, a time when developers were figuring out how to translate a team sport onto a home console. You got a decent selection of national teams to choose from, which felt like a step up from the more basic soccer games available at the time.
You control all eleven players on your chosen team, switching automatically to whoever is nearest the ball. The main goal is simple: score more goals than the opponent. The game has a few mechanics that stand out. You can perform a sliding tackle to dispossess an opponent, though mistiming it results in a foul. There is also a through pass button to send a teammate sprinting ahead into open space, which was a more strategic option than just booting the ball forward. The pacing is generally quick, and the computer can be surprisingly aggressive on higher difficulty settings, making you work for every shot. Playing it feels like a fast, sometimes scrappy contest where a single well-placed pass can break the game open.
