About Wolf Child
I first played Wolf Child on the Sega Genesis back in 1993, a time when the console was full of side-scrolling action games. It was developed by Core Design, the same studio that later made Tomb Raider. The game felt like a part of that era's push for cinematic presentation, with its detailed sprites and a story told through cutscenes, which was still a bit novel for a cartridge game.
You control a scientist named Joe, who transforms into a powerful wolf-man hybrid to rescue his kidnapped son. The gameplay is a mix of platforming and combat, switching between Joe's human form for puzzle-solving and his wolf form for fighting enemies with claws. You explore levels screen by screen, collecting power-ups and keys to progress, while dealing with instant death pits and some unforgiving enemy placements. The difficulty is quite steep, demanding precise jumps and quick reactions, which makes progress feel earned rather than given. Navigating the levels and managing the transformation mechanic creates a tense, sometimes frustrating, but consistently engaging experience.
