Winter Challenge came out for the Sega Genesis in 1992, published by Accolade. It was part of that wave of early 90s sports titles that tried to capture the feel of watching the Olympics on television, translating it into a button mashing contest on your living room floor. The game focused entirely on winter sports, a less common theme at the time compared to the usual football or basketball games.

You control an athlete competing in seven different events, including downhill skiing, ski jumping, and bobsled. The main objective is to earn the highest total score across all events to win the gold medal. Signature mechanics change with each event; the skiing relies on a rhythm of timed button presses to navigate gates, while the ski jump requires you to hold a crouch for speed and then release at the perfect moment for lift. The bobsled event is all about managing your sled's momentum through tight turns. The pacing is quick, with each event being a short, intense burst of action, but the difficulty can be unforgiving, especially nailing the timing on the jumps. It feels like a frantic race against both the clock and your own coordination.
