Man, Wayne Gretzky and the NHLPA All-Stars was such a weird little hockey game. Came out during the '95 lockout, so no real NHL teams—just a bunch of players thrown together in jerseys that looked like they were designed in MS Paint. The gameplay’s actually not bad though, kinda arcade-y with big hits and fast breaks. Gretzky’s on the cover, but good luck spotting him in-game unless you squint at the pixelated faces.
First thing you’ll notice? The rosters are all scrambled since they couldn’t use team names. Messier might be on the same line as Lemieux, and the goalies feel like they’re made of wet cardboard. Still, there’s something charming about how janky it all is. If you’ve got a Genesis collecting dust, it’s worth a laugh at least.
