About Waterworld (europe) (proto)
I picked up a prototype version of Waterworld for the Sega Genesis, a cartridge that never saw a full commercial release in Europe. It was developed by Ocean Software, a company known for many movie tie-ins during the 16-bit era. This game exists as a curious artifact from that period, a time when developers were still figuring out how to translate big-budget films into engaging side-scrolling adventures.
You control the Mariner, navigating a flooded world from a side-scrolling perspective. The main goal is to rescue a girl and her companion from a group of raiders called the Smokers. Your primary actions involve swimming through submerged ruins, climbing onto floating platforms, and using a spear gun to fend off enemies. The game is structured around screen-by-screen exploration, often requiring you to find specific items or keys to unlock new areas. The pacing is deliberate, with careful swimming and precise jumps needed to avoid hazards, and the difficulty can be unforgiving if you miss a shot or misjudge a leap. Playing it feels like a methodical struggle for survival in a sunken landscape.
