Waterworld for the Sega Genesis was a game I remember hearing about but never saw on store shelves. It was developed by Ocean Software and based on the 1995 film, but the cartridge was never officially released to the public. It exists as a prototype, a piece of that mid-90s era when movie tie-ins were common and the 16-bit consoles were at their peak.

You control the Mariner, navigating a sunken world on a small jet ski. The main goal is to rescue a girl and find the mythical Dryland. You explore the flooded landscape screen by screen, using a spear gun to fend off hostile Smokers on their own watercraft. The game is primarily an action platformer; you jump between floating platforms and dive underwater to access new areas, all while managing a limited air supply. The pacing is relentless, with enemies swarming constantly, and the difficulty is punishing. Playing it feels like a constant struggle against both the environment and the game's own demanding design.
