Warsong (or Langrisser, depending on which side of the Pacific you're on) is one of those Genesis gems that flew under the radar back in the day. It's basically Fire Emblem meets Advance Wars before either of those really blew up—you've got your anime-style heroes leading squads of knights, archers, and mages across grid-based battlefields.

The first thing you'll notice is Urushihara's character art—all flowing hair and dramatic poses—which looks way too good for a 16-bit game. Then the strategy kicks in: positioning your leader units matters because if they go down, their whole squad scatters. I learned that the hard way when my cavalry charge turned into a panicked retreat.

There's something satisfying about watching your little pixel troops clash, even if the AI sometimes makes questionable decisions (why does the enemy healer keep charging into melee?). The music's got that classic MD synth punch too—that victory fanfare still gets stuck in my head.

Fair warning though, the translation's a bit rough in places, but the hacked version cleans up some of the weirder text quirks. If you dig tactical RPGs with actual consequences for bad moves, this one's aged surprisingly well.
