Warpspeed came out for the Sega Genesis in 1993, published by Accolade. It was part of that wave of early 90s space shooters on the system, games that tried to push the hardware with fast scrolling and lots of on-screen action. You don't hear about it as much as some of the bigger names from that era, but it had its own approach to the genre.

You pilot a lone starfighter through vertically scrolling stages filled with enemy formations and obstacles. Your main goal is to survive from the bottom of the screen to the top, clearing each sector. The signature mechanics involve collecting power-ups to switch between different weapon types, like spread shots and lasers, and managing a warp drive that lets you instantly jump forward a set distance to escape tight spots. The pacing is relentless; enemies pour in from all sides, and the difficulty ramps up quickly, demanding sharp reflexes and smart use of your warp to avoid certain destruction. It feels like a constant, frantic scramble for survival where one wrong move ends your run.
